William Hickman Dolman was born in Muskingum County, Ohio in 1830. In 1847, he moved to St. Louis, Missouri where he worked as a clerk in a store. In 1852 he went west to California to mine for gold. He first mined at Diamond Springs in California, then he moved to Nevada and mined for silver in Gold Hill; he drew up the first laws for Nevada's first organized mining district, called the "Columbia District."
